Okay, okay, just go up and knock. They can't seriously turn you away, can they now? That's got to be against some law, denying somebody the right to get a starter pokemon...I man, unless they're criminals or something... The thoughts streaming through his heads may have been amusing to him on other days, when he could laugh about how meek and nervous he was, but not today. A boy about fourteen stood on the the path leading up to the Lab, biting the inside of his cheek nervously, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. They couldn't turn him away, right? No, surely not. Laughing to calm his nerves, he ran a hand through his messy light brown hair, before walking in what he hoped appeared to be a brave way as he walked to the door.
Somewhere along, he'd forgotten to knock, and so he found himself in a vast, white room filled with technology, alone. Nathaniel blinked nervously about, trying to find a lab assistant, or a helpful pokemon, or somebody to assure him he hadn't broken some kind of unspoken law. Could entering a public building without announcing himself be considered 'breaking and entering?' Now you're just being paranoid... He said to himself silently, laughing once more before deciding to call out for aid.
"E-erm, hello....? Anyone th-there?" His voice echoed, reminding him that he'd stuttered when he spoke. Real great job impressing them, Nate. You're a regular hero. Shaking the thoughts away, Nathaniel waited anxiously, repeating his earlier action of shifting his weight from foot to foot. Where were they?

"Yes? Hello there. Here for your starter pokemon are you?" a rather young looking girl asked the nervous boy. "I'm Professor Lori's assistant, Nina. How can I help you?"

Nathaniel, despite how he'd expected for someone to show up eventually, jumped at the girl's appearance, almost knocking over a vase, obviously used to brighten the lab. Hastily rearranging it so it was once more in the right position, he turned to Nina, smiling nervously. Relax, she looks younger than you...It's not like she'd going to put you into a choke hold or something... Calmed down slightly be that thought--he really didn't know how--he responded to the question.
"Y-Yeah!" He exclaimed, before realizing how loud the word had come out, echoing around the room, and softening his tone a bit. "I'm here for my starter...I heard something about a color system?"
That was a strange thought. In Kanto, you had to pick from a Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle. But in Iris, you seemed to have a chance for something besides the regular beginners. While it was different, it was also a welcome change. He waited for her reply.

"Oh yes! The color system. It's where you pick any color you want and we randomly pick a pokemon of the same color. Do you have any color in mind?" Nina asked him with a cheerful smile and moving closer, a book in her arms.

Oh, he'd thought it was much more complicated. Like he'd have to draw a color out of a hat, and than they'd randomly select a pokemon for him. And how is that much more complicated...? Ignoring his cynical thoughts, he tried to pick a color that might bring a pokemon he liked.
He could choose blue, which had the possibility of giving him a Riolu. Nathaniel had seen a trainer with one, once, and had taken a liking to the pokemon instantly. But they were rare, so there was probably a little to zero chance of them having one. Still, Nathaniel decided to test his look. If not, he might still get a nice water pokemon. Mind made up, he stated the color of his choice.
"Blue." He replied, hoping he'd recieve a good pokemon, even if it wasn't a Riolu.

"Blue? Let's see......ah! Here's one! The pokemon you've chosen is Finneon, from Sinnoh. Quite a beautiful and powerful pokemon if I say so myself. Do you wish to keep it?" she asked after she found a pokeball and showed a picture of Finneon to the boy.

Nathaniel considered the water type for a moment. While it sure wasn't a Riolu, it might be a powerful companion. After a moment, he finally decided he'd take the pokemon. Even if he turned out not to like it, he could trade it later if really became so unbearable. He doubted that, though.
"Sure, I'll take it." He said, grinning. Besides, he could always ask for one at the Shrines he'd heard so much of. Maybe they'd be kind to him and grant his wish.

"Thank you." Nathaniel said softly, taking the pokeball and rolling it in his hands before placing it in his pack. Sure, she wasn't his first choice, but she'd probably be a great companion and helper. All pokemon were. He took the starter pack as well, also placing it in his pack hurried.
"'Bye." He called as he headed out the door of the lab, which wasn't nearly as hard as working up the courage of going through it to get in. Feeling much more confident with the water type in his possession, he headed onward, wondering if he might like this Iris place better than he first thought he would.
